I will defend my thesis entitled From Computability to Executability – A process-theoretic view on automata theory on Thursday 27 October 2011 at 16:00 in (lecture) room 5 of the Auditorium of the Eindhoven University of Technology.

The defence will be in Dutch! Concerning the dress code: there is none, only for the Ph.D. candidate and the paranymphs. However, some people tend to dress up for it a bit, so think of it as a wedding.

Where?

For more information on how to reach the university campus, the campus map, parking information, visit the accessibility page (Nederlands). The Auditorium is marked “AUD” on the map. Inside the Auditorium, the entrance to lecture room 5 is on the ground level.

See also the following Google map for all relevant locations for this day. (If you come by car, note that there are two parking areas right next to the Auditorium. Also, if you come from the direction Den Bosch or Tilburg, follow “Helmond”, not “Eindhoven”, until you see directions for the university!)

What and When?

So, what does a Ph.D. defence entail? Well, it follows a rather strict ceremony that starts at 16:00.

The ceremony (16:00–17:30)

After the defence committee has arrived and the meeting is opened by the chairman, the Ph.D. candidate is supposed to explain his/her research in layman’s terms for about 10 minutes (this is the first question). This is followed by questions about the thesis and propositions (stellingen) from the people in the defence committee, called opponents. This will take up exactly one hour, that is, until 17:00, after which the committee will retreat for deliberation. After 15 to 30 minutes, they will return and indicate (hopefully ;)) that the candidate deserves the doctoral title. The supervisor will promote the candidate, followed by a small speech about the experiences of the last four years.

Reception (17:30–18:30)

The ceremony is followed by a reception that gives opportunity for congratulations and a drink from 17:30 till 18:30. It is being held at the grand cafe De Zwarte Doos on the first floor (Lounge). De Zwarte Doos is located next to the Auditorium (about 120m towards the south).

Dinner party (18:30–)

Those who are invited for the dinner party (I am sorry I could not invite everyone! I’ll make up for it for sure.) should go around 18:30 to:

  Restaurant Boekencafé Schrijvers
  Dommelstraat 24
  5611 CL Eindhoven

The dinner is a buffet and it is all paid for (including drinks)!

For walking directions, see the Google map. However, there should be enough people that know the way.

Who?

Fortunately, I don’t have to do this all alone. I am accompanied during the day by my two paranymphs: Admar Schoonen and Alexandra Silva. If you need more information, don’t hesitate to contact me or my paranymphs.
